As you can see the finished result was quite pleasing. Although it may appear to be quite a simple task to remove one boy and place him next to the other, there were quite a few steps to take.
Firstly a full background removal was required on the old photo to ensure perfect cloning and positioning. There are other ways to accomplish the same result but I prefer this as it tends to give a better finish. Then the photo was turned to black and white so that the correct colours could be chosen to match that of the other child.  After cloning it was just a case of choosing a surround and some appropriate wording to suit the personalised photo gift.
Photo manipulation of this sort would generally take an hour or two, obviously the more characters or photos you are working from then the greater the time involved.
There are some automated programmes on the market but none of these will give you a perfect finish as most tend to leave some of the background and as far as resizing and colourising is concerned i am not sure that there is one.
If you are thinking of getting some restoration work like this done yourself, then it is best to send the photos together with a short description of how you would like your photo gift to look. This will cost you nothing and you can then decide yourself once you have received a quote or sample.
