Black and White to Colour

This photo is an example of the type of image enhancement possibilities with digital photo technology.  Instead of stopping at merely converting the photo from black and white to colour, there was a bit more artistic creativity involved.

This project started with an older black and white photo of a woman with two small children.  The first step was to change the photo from The black and white to colour.  Because of the variations in textures and color shading, this is a process that must be accomplished by hand.  The technician must go through each area of the photo and decide what color shading is to be used.

The next phase of the image enhancement was the addition of the heart shaped shading.  As you can see, the photo was darkened at the edges, with gradual lightening as it got closer to the edge of the heart.  At the edges of the heart the fading was much more noticeable in order to have the smooth blending.  This avoids a sharp defining line around the heart shape, and gives a noticeable, but much more pleasant effect.

This type of artistic effect would be a great idea for a 50th Anniversary gift.  You could find an old wedding picture of the anniversary couple, scan it into a digital format, and you could have the photo back in its original location before the couple even realizes it was taken.  The black and white to colour photo restoration could be completed, and you would have a very memorable gift to give on that special day.
