Black and White To Colour

Many people have a collection of old photographs that were shot in black and white.  These may have been pictures that once belonged to their parents or grandparents, are part of a genealogy collection, or it may even be pictures of themselves as children.  Now that they have these photographs, they want to know if it is possible to convert them from black and white to colour .  Well, not only is it possible, modern technology and photo restoration has made it possible to create photos that look like they were originally shot in color.

Converting old pictures from black and white to colour is not an easy procedure, and one that is beyond the scope of most people.  There are no computer programs that can be run to automate the process, so each photo must be colorized by hand.  It requires a trained technician to go through each section of the picture to determine what the color should be.  Once the correct color is determined, the technician then must go through each section of the picture and add the correct color. This is a slow, time consuming process.  It is something that cannot be rushed.

A good example of black and white to colour would be a picture of your parents as a young couple standing on the beach.  While it would be nice to simply click a button and have the black and white beach turn into a beautiful golden brown, it just does not work that way.  If you look at a beach, there are many different variations of color.  The wet sand is typically darker than dry sand, and every dune and ridge creates shadows, which are darker than the surrounding sand.  Each section of the beach must be hand colored.  The same would be true of the water, and of the sky behind the couple.

One nice thing about having the ability to colorize pictures from black and white to colour is the creativity it allows.  You could leave the entire picture in its original black and white, and make just the couple in color, or even just her bright yellow polka dot bikini.  The limit to what is available is only the limits of your imagination and creativity.  If you can envision it, chances are you can have it done.
